Launching an online game is always going to be a bumpy road, and that was most certainly the experience for developer Bulkhead and its initial early access release of Wardogs, the large-scale multiplayer FPS, as evidenced by a video documenting its opening hours.
The video provides a candid and unfiltered (which is to say there’s lots of swearing) look at the opening of the game’s doors, which were immediately beset by queue problems, legit players caught in ban waves, and the need for server restarts and hotfixing. Eventually, after players were let into the game in waves, queues finally stabilized and the devs popped open a celebratory bottle of bubbly with an extremely muted and exhausted cheer.
The problems with the initial release are likely not a surprise, as the game’s Steam player count roared to an all-time high of over 420K and Bulkhead noted 2 million copies sold so far as of last Thursday. Meanwhile, a maintenance patch has been deployed that focuses on better server browsing, bug fixing, and other improvements, while community-run servers will get a small boost to in-game cash earnings through the week as an apology for what Bulkhead calls underdelivering on community servers.
