Analogue Re-Releases The Super Nt & Mega Sg

Analogue has just announced they’re re-releasing their FPGA recreations of the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis with pre-orders opening this Monday October 19th at 11AM NYC time. They appear to be essentially the same as the last time they were on sale, with just a few updates that I’ll go over below. Each console also has multiple color choices available. The price will be $220 and they’re due to ship by the end of the year.

It’s nice to once again see these able to be purchased outside of scalpers, as they’re awesome ways people can play their original SNES/SFC, Genesis/Mega Drive cartridges. And the price is basically the same as the last time they were in stock. They also included native support for Bluetooth controllers, as well as 8BitDo 2.4GHz controllers with no external dongles required.

Analogue’s press release also states “Reworked industrial design, OS, packaging, and more”. Luckily, both consoles retained support for the DAC, which is great as open source alternatives are soon to be released. And the power input was switched from MicroUSB to USB-C.

Unfortunately, both consoles are capped at 1080p, with no 4K or even 1440p options like you may have expected a decade after their original release. There’s also no added support for the OpenFPGA platform their Pocket offers. They’re still great consoles and I hope to see them stay in stock, I just think people would have expected more from a “relaunch”.
