Blimey! Where did August go? How can it be September already? Despite our concerns at how fast time is speeding by, at least it’s the weekend, and that means a great opportunity to sit down and play some video games. This is our weekly feature where we fill you in on what the team have been playing this week, and we’d also love to hear from you. Complete our poll at the bottom of the article, and let us know – what are you playing this weekend?

The gamescom dust has finally settled, and as our community can see from the sheer number of previews going up, we played a lot of games. I won’t go into insane amounts of detail on every single thing, but will comment on a few. And if you haven’t checked out my thoughts on Fable or Gears: E-Day’s campaign yet, you should!

Our preview of Exodus, the new sci-fi ARPG went up yesterday following Jesse’s trip to Austin, Texas to play. I also went hands on during Gamescom, and can confirm that it really is excellent. Right up there as one of the things you should be looking forward to playing early next year.

Right next to it of course, is another sci-fi ARPG with Owlcat Games’ ‘The Expanse: Osiris Reborn‘ which I got to play for around 90 minutes. It’s really good, though the combat still needs a little work. Still, I can’t wait to spend more time in the Expanse universe.

For something a little smaller, fans can check out my preview for N+∞X2, which I’m pleased to report ticks all the nostalgia boxes, and retains it’s tight, satisfying platforming.

The same can be said of Speedrunners 2, which dropped onto Game Pass and all platforms earlier this week, though outside of the core mode, the sequel feels like it’s added a lot of unnecessary fluff. Still fun though! It’s also worth checking out Bullet-Heaven platformer Blood Dungeon, which is pretty good, but quite slow to get going.

Oh, and I should probably mention Orbitals, which released earlier this week exclusively on Switch 2 – it’s a solid co-op game, that starts slow, but gets going and doesn’t let up right up to the end credits. It was a little rough for me to be locked to 30FPS, but it’s a very pretty, unique game. Worth checking out!

Anyway – back to the preview dungeon, lots more to write up!

After my Halloween: The Game review went live earlier in the week I’ve been enjoying reading up player reactions online as early access has started, especially given the mixed critical response across the board. Let’s just say…not all the issues have been fixed yet.

Otherwise, I’ve been taking a bit of a break from the multiplayer titles for two big single player epics! My review code for The Blood of Dawnwalker arrived at launch and I’ve been delving into the opening hours. As someone who was overwhelmed with The Witcher 3’s lore, the fresh start has been much appreciated.

Between vampires and murder in suburbia I’ve been finding time to play even more Elden Ring on Switch 2. It’s been surprisingly fun to grind runes before bed with a lo-fi playlist on! Dare I say…cosy?

There’s no way to talk about everything so here’s a list of my favorite things I’ve played over the last week+

• Exodus: fantastic Mass-effect like first impression. Curious to see how this one turns out next April
• Metro 2039: Stunningly good looking, fun to play, and actually good English VO. Another February banger in the works
• Onimusha: Way of the Sword: Excellent in almost every way, save two. English VO is not good, going for shlocky old Samurai dubs, and you fight the same bosses way too many times
• State of Decay 3: Got to play 30 minutes or so at Gamescom and it feels like Super Ultra Mega Arcade Hyper Fighting State of Decay 2, a.k.a. exactly what I had wanted.
• Wo Long 2 | Wings of Ember: Can’t say any impressions yet, other than keep an eye out on the site later this month for a preview with a surprising twist
• Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy: F’ing fantastic video game in every single respect, go read the review and then play it
• Alien Deathstorm: Great Aliens-like that I only played 20 minutes of so I can’t form too many deep opinions about

And many, many more things. Gamescom was awesome (once I was there), and I shall miss it in the future.
